Danish Army
Specific: Bought from the
Bundeswehr in the mid 1980´s to fill in gaps in
mobilisation-depots, but today all are demobbed.
Some were sold by Danish Army Material Command and some
were given as aid to the Baltic countries.
Historical: Short after WW II Magirus started to
produce trucks based on the pre-war 3 ton truck of the
Schell-plan, and in April 1951 the first authentic
post-war vehicles were launched. The range included
models known as the Mercur and the Jupiter, which was
introduced in 1957.
A contract for 7 ton vehicles to the German Bundeswehr
was offered in 1956. After trials the contract was
offered to Magirus-Deutz and the model A6500, which were
a 4 x 4 truck, became standard in the class. The vehicle
was powered by a 8-cylinder diesel engine (F8L614) with
10.6 liter displacement which developed 170 hp.
From 1956 to 1960 some 1.500 trucks were delivered to the
Bundeswehr. The first 500 vehicles had a closed cab.
Alternative body styles included tipper, wrecker,
elevating platform, rocket launcher, fire fighter, fuel
truck, tractor etc. Most military versions had a soft-top
cab as shown.
In 1960 the A6550 was superseded by the Jupiter, which in
its military form was the predecessor for the Magirus
Deutz 178 D15A. and produced from 1960 to 1964.
From 1961 the truck was powered by the F8L714 multi-fuel
engine.
The Jupiter and the 178D15A became the standard 7 ton
vehicle in the West German Army from 1960. Known variants are aircraft
refueller, decontamination truck, fire-fighting truck, light artillery
rocket system, tipper, tractor and wrecker.
When production ceased in 1967 some 7.800 vehicles had
been produced.
