Specific: The Peugeot 604 was acquired in
1977 for use by higher-ranking officers (normally
generals of a division, etc.). Later superseded by the Peugeot
605.
Historical: The 604 was shown for the first time
at the Geneva Motor Show in 1975, even though it was not
yet completely finalised. Sales started in September same
year.
The first engine was a joint development between Peugeot,
Renault and Volvo. After lengthy research, the motor
ended up as a V6 with an initial capacity of 2664 cm3.
In 1978 the ZM114 engine with Weber carburettor and 122
hp was introduced, and the model was modified in various
ways.
A 2.3 liter turbo charged diesel engine was introduced in
February 1979.
In 1984 a new 2.8 liter petrol engine and a 2.5 liter
turbo charged diesel engine was introduced.
The 604 shared many common parts with the 504.
When production ceased in
November 1985 nearly 153 000 vehicles had been produced.
