Danish Army
Specific: 12 - 15 of these vehicles became part
of the Danish inventory in 1978, and were used by a
Danish headquarters-company serving HQ LANDJUT in Rendsburg, Germany as
staff-vehicles. Used by 2 (DA) Signal Battalion for some
years, and finally demobbed in the late 1980´s.
Historical: A contract for 5 ton vehicles to the
German Bundeswehr was offered in 1956. After trials the
contract was offered to MAN and Mercedes-Benz, and the
MAN 630 and the Mercedes-Benz LG 315/46 became standard
in this class. Others competitors for the contract in
this class were Krupp, Büssing, Henschel, Magirus-Deutz
and Faun.
As neither MAN or Mercedes-Benz were able to start
production of the vehicles before 1958, some 400 Henschel
HS 115 A 5 ton trucks were acquired as a stop gap
measure.
The MAN 630 was developed from the MAN ML 4500 A, which
was produced from 1940 to 1944.
The earliest produced vehicles had a 4.5 m cargo bed and
a spare wheel behind the cab. From 1959 a 5 m cargo bed
was used, and the spare wheel relocated under the left
side of the bed.
The MAN 630 was used as communication vehicle, ambulance,
drone carrier, field kitchen, radar vehicle, tractor,
tanker and tipper.
Shelters were produced by amongst others Bauer in Köln,
Blumhardt in Wuppertal, Zeppelinwerke in Friedrichshafen
and Hans Glas in Dingolfing.
20.935 vehicles were made when production ceased in 1972.
Of those more than 7.600 was of the above shown type.
The type was replaced in the late 1990´s after approx.
forty years of service in the German Bundeswehr.
A similar vehicle with single rear wheels was designated
630 L2AE.
Some 1700 vehicles were delivered as PKD to the Belgium Army.

America.
